LAKE COUNTY, A Great Place To Call Home!...

Located in the geographic center of Florida, Lake County encompasses 1,162 square miles of diverse landscape and terrain. Lake County was formed from a portion of Orange and Sumter counties in 1887. Today its population is approaching 277,000. The residents of Lake County enjoy a temperate climate with January's average temperature being 75 degrees. Which means a mid-January round of golf is a must. Even on warmer days in August, the cooling breezes that are captured by the rolling hills temper the daytime heat and make a summer evening outside a time to enjoy.

The recreational opportunities of Lake County are diverse. Lake County has within its borders nearly 1,400 lakes some of which are interconnected by canals and rivers allowing the boater to travel from lake to lake. This system forms the "Chain of Lakes". These same lakes are known for some of the best fishing worldwide. Anglers of all levels can enjoy a quiet day of fishing or compete for prize bass in one of the many world class competitions held each year. Lake County plays host to ESPN's and Citgo's Bassmaster Tournament.

If fishing is not for you, the cities and towns of Lake County offer a variety of entertainment from shopping and dining, to a year long schedule of festivals and celebrations, so much so that Lake County is known as "The Festival County". From the Lake County Fair to the Mount Dora Art Festival, you can enjoy festivals of exotic cars, sailing, arts and crafts, antique boats, Mardi Gras and the Leesburg Bike Fest. The popular Renninger's Antiques and Collectibles Shows in Mount Dora draw hundreds of vendors and thousands of tourists. For something a bit quieter, a visit to the Lakeridge Winery and Vineyards offers great wine tasting and entertainment or wine stomping fun. The hosts at the Yalaha Country Bakery will temp you with authentic European treats and outdoor entertainment. Step back in time at the Austin Carriage Museum with its antique horse- drawn carriages. With its abundance of lakeside trails Lake County Florida is an equestrian paradise.

It wouldn't be Florida without golf! Lake County is no exception. There are 33 golf courses in the county within a 30 mile radius. The natural rolling hills, which are uniquely Lake County, offer striking elevation changes and spectacular views. The courses are plentiful and offer a challenge for every level of ability. The wonderful weather means the opportunity to build your game with year round playing on a wide range of courses.

Lake County is also home to magnificent wildlife, from the endangered bald-headed eagle to the giant osprey, ibis, sandhill cranes and hawks. Bear, deer, eagles and other wildlife reside in the pristine woodlands of the 383,200 acres of the Ocala National Forest that borders Lake County to the north. A ride through this forest with its dense pines and woodlands will make you wonder if you are still in Florida. Located in south Lake County and just a short drive from Orlando is Lake Louisa State Park in Clermont. A 4,372 acre state park on the shores of Lake Louisa one of 13 in a chain of lakes connected by the Palatlakaha River. With spectacular scenery and Florida sunshine, it's not surprising to learn that outdoor activities are a popular way for Lake County residents to spend their time!

The over 300 restaurants in Lake County offer something for all different tastes and occasions. From small to large, from simple to exotic, from the well-known chains to the delightfully unique, there is no reason to stay home and cook! Take a leisurely drive over the many scenic roads with picturesque vistas, or hit the links for 18 holes, but end the day with a culinary treat at one of the many fine eateries.

The City of Tavares is the County seat and is home to many of the Lake County Government offices. The largest city in Lake County is Clermont with a population of 20,017 residents. The second largest city is Eustis with a population of 16,884 followed by the city of Leesburg.

As you can see there's much to do in Lake County. As for me, I just got a new camera so I'm planning time for a scenic drive along Lakeshore Drive and Lake Eustis Drive off of US Hwy. 441. The road is high above Lake Eustis and affords great views.

Lake County Florida...home to wildlife and waterways, golf courses and fine dining, festivals and fairs...and perhaps...home to you!
